Westside High School
Project Description
Location: Augusta, GA
Client: Richmond County Board of Education
Architect: Harley & Associates Architects, P.C.
Size: 138,000 SF Renovation and 16,000 SF Addition
Westside High School’s new 16,000 square foot addition was designed to mirror other gymnasiums in the county, with the exception of an expansive blue peaked Fire Stone roof to serve as an entrance to the school campus. The gym includes a large lobby with guest restrooms, concession area, and glass trophy cases. The gym includes electronic telescoping bleachers, Home and Visiting locker rooms, coach’s offices, and classrooms. The entire site was built up to grade level and later landscaped to appropriately fit in with the existing school. McKnight repaved and expanded the gyms parking lot and took care to make recommendations to the owner when unforeseen site conditions threatened to slow the job.
The existing school was renovated while school was in session. The Media Center and science classrooms were entirely stripped and refurnished with new equipment. Classrooms received new ceilings, HVAC units, terrazzo floors, paint, and markerboards. Where necessary, McKnight installed spray foam insulation to bring the building up to the necessary codes.
